New Applicant, Current ESP, or Past Substitute Teacher

How to Become a Guest (Substitute) Teacher in
Washoe County School District (WCSD)

This process applies to new applicants, current Educational Support Personnel (ESP), and past substitute teachers seeking re-employment.

Step 1: Obtain Your Nevada State Substitute or Teacher License

You must hold a valid substitute or teacher license issued by the Nevada Department of Education (NDE).  Nevada Department of Education.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 60 college credits, or an associate (or higher) degree earned.

For all questions regarding licensure requirements, contact the NDE directly at 775-687-9115 or via email at license@doe.nv.gov.

NOTE: Emergency Licenses can only be used in our rural schools, are only good for one year, cost the same as a standard license. 

Step 2: Complete the WCSD "Certified" Application and Submit References

Complete a Washoe County School District certified application and attach it to the Guest (Substitute) Teacher job posting.

References:
All district positions require two (2) returned confidential references.

  • One reference must be from a current or previous direct supervisor.
  • Provide email addresses for your references in the application to expedite the electronic return process.
  • Notify your references that you will be using them and encourage a prompt response.
  • References cannot be older than 18 months.

Step 3: Attach your WCSD application to the Job Posting

On the WCSD website, look for Careers, open Job Opportunities, click the link for Certified, All Applicants. 

 The Guest Teacher position is listed under the Washoe County School District as the department.

Step 4: Complete your Onboarding

After reviewing your completed application packet, we will contact you to schedule your orientation. Applications can take up to two weeks to be reviewed. 

Completed applications will have the following:

  • You have received your substitute or teaching license.
  • Your online application is complete (both references are marked as "returned").
  • You have successfully applied for the "Guest (Substitute) Teacher" position online.

Receive Orientation Materials
Once your application is approved, our office will email you the Orientation Steps along with an Adobe packet to complete. 

Complete All Required Items
All orientation requirements must be completed before your requested start date. New and rehired employees may not begin work until all requirements are complete.

Most orientation items are completed electronically; however, some steps require in-person completion.

Attend In-Person Appointment
Hiring is finalized once you meet in person with our office to complete the final steps.
