Native American Language Grant (Natchez Elementary)

Why do we need to learn about Numu language and culture?

“We need to learn about Numu language and culture because our elders are passing and save our culture.”            - 4th grade student

“...so maybe we can be teaching Numu too, like our teachers.” - 2nd grade student

“ In the past, students at Natchez Elementary school haven't had access to curriculum and learning that connects with their ancestor's first language and their rich cultural heritage. The Young Mustangs-Strong Futures project will provide bridges to learning that access historically deep, internal ways of being and knowing in the northern Paiute community. .”

NAL Implementation at Natchez Elementary:

  • K-5 students receive 30 minutes of Numu language and culture instruction four times a week.
  • PreK students receive 15 minutes of Numu Language and culture instruction four times a week.
  • Multi-disciplinary units designed to enrich students identities by prioritizing Great Basin traditional knowledge systems.
  • Family Engagement activities that:
    • showcase student learning
    • inform community members
    • establish cultural connections
  • Development and administration of pre- and post-assessments.
