SOS Signs of Suicide

The SOS - Signs of Suicide program teaches students about mental health and how to seek help if they are concerned about themselves or a friend.

Through this program, students learn:

  • That depression is treatable and that seeking help is an important and positive step
  • How to recognize signs of depression and potential suicide risk in themselves or others
  • How to ACT by Acknowledging warning signs, Caring for the person, and Telling a trusted adult
  • Whom they can approach at school for support

In 7th grade, students will participate in the MindWise curriculum. At the end of the lesson, students complete an exit slip indicating whether they would like to speak with an adult about any concerns. After the lessons are completed, and with parent or guardian consent, students will complete a brief depression screening questionnaire. While this screening does not provide a diagnosis, it helps identify whether a student may benefit from follow-up support from a mental health professional. Screenings take place at school and are supported by a qualified mental health team from The Children’s Cabinet, along with licensed school counselors.

In 10th grade, students also receive the MindWise curriculum, with content tailored to age-appropriate topics. However, depression screenings are not conducted at this grade level.

We encourage families to visit www.mindwise.org/parents for information on youth suicide warning signs, helpful resources, and key messages students will learn through the program.
