AI (Artificial Intelligence)

The Washoe County School District is committed to the responsible, ethical, and effective use of AI to strengthen teaching, learning, and operations. Our goal is to use AI as a supportive tool that empowers educators and staff, prepares students for their future, and builds trust with our community.

Our Vision for AI in Education

WCSD has established a framework that ensures AI is used responsibly, ethically, and effectively. This framework aligns with the Nevada Department of Education’s STELLAR initiative and anticipates statewide guidance under Senate Bill 199. AI is positioned as a support tool -- not a replacement for educators -- and our governance emphasizes academic integrity, equity, efficiency, and data protection.

Key Principles and Guardrails

Our Three Core Guardrails

To guide safe and effective AI use, WCSD follows three core guardrails that apply to all staff and students:

Always Protect Student and Staff Confidentiality:

Staff are prohibited from entering personally identifiable information into public AI tools to safeguard privacy and remain compliant with FERPA.

Use AI Purposefully and Transparently:

AI use should be aligned with the district's mission and professional standards. Staff and students must acknowledge when AI contributes to their work.

Always Keep a Human-in-the-Loop:

All AI-generated content must be reviewed, verified, and approved by a human expert. Human judgment and professional standards must always be maintained.
