Professional Learning on Family Engagement

  • Building partnerships with families is one of the critical components of student success.  Educators need the opportunity to reflect on their practices and learn from each other how to effectively partner with every family.  Family engagement is also a critical component of the Professional Growth System for teachers in WCSD as well as the Nevada Educator Performance Framework.

The Department supports educators with professional learning throughout the school year in the following ways:

    • In-services on family engagement in partnership with the Council on Family Engagement - click here for a catalog of WCSD Professional Learning opportunities and search for 'Partnering with Families for Student Success." We currently have two 8-hour versions of each class which is offered for elementary teachers and support staff as well as secondary teachers and support staff.

    • Alternative Route to Licensure - course on family engagement - an 8-hour course for aspiring educators pursuing a teaching credential.

    • Literacy Specialists - monthly professional learning for Literacy Specialists as part of Nevada K.I.D.S law for reading by grade three.  Literacy Specialists represent each of WCSD's elementary schools.

    • Saturday Cafe's for teachers - workshops for teachers tied to monthly professional learning themes in WCSD.

    • Department and program specific professional learning - throughout the year, we collaborate with schools and departments on professional learning and provide a menu of professional learning supports for each of our programs and initiatives.
