Programs & Initiatives

  • The Washoe County School District Department of Family-School Partnerships supports the following practices, programs and initiatives:

    • Academic Parent Teacher Teams - a new way of conferencing with families, sharing data and modeling practices that can support learning at home. Academic Parent Teacher Teams is a specific model for data sharing from WestEd. We support schools with implementation on this model.

    • Family Graduation Advocates - family liaisons are placed in the majority of our district's high schools to support families with information on high school graduation requirements, End of Course exams, communication with teachers and school resources for student academic success.

    • Infinite Campus Parent Portal Outreach - support for families on how to access their Infinite Campus Parent Portal account and what to do with the information. This family engagement strategy is particularly effective in the upper elementary grades, middle and high school.

    • Parent Teacher Home Visit Project - training and implementation support for the Parent Teacher Home Visit Project. The home visits completed with this project focus on building positive relationships with families. The project is currently available to Title I schools only.

    • Parent University - classes for families that are linked to learning. Parent U provides childcare, interpretation and content experts who facilitate classes at school sites and community locations.

    • Parent University Family Access Days - typically offered 2 times per year. Pre-K through 12th grade families are provided transportation to the University of Nevada, Reno on a Saturday and provided a full-day of family workshops on the path to college and highly skilled careers.  This is a partnership with the University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College.

    • Professional Learning for School Staff on Family Engagement - in alignment with the federal framework for family engagement, the department supports teachers, administrators and support professionals with opportunities for professional learning on family engagement.

    • Support for the WCSD Council on Family Engagement - the Council consists of family members of WCSD students, community members and school staff who meet monthly to provide recommendations to the Superintendent on the district's family engagement initiatives and practices.
