Do you know a young woman between the ages of 14 and 17 who exhibits leadership qualities as a volunteer in your community or school? Who sees challenges instead of obstacles? Hope instead of despair? If you know a young woman who believes in the power of volunteer action, then she may be eligible for a Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award.

The Violet Richardson Award is Soroptimist International of the Americas’ leadership and volunteer recognition program dedicated to teen girls. Soroptimist International of Truckee Meadows is one of nearly 1,500 clubs that make up Soroptimist International of the Americas, a volunteer service organization for business and professional women committed to improving the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world.

The Violet Richardson Award,  which includes a monetary prize, recognizes young women leaders who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts. Volunteer projects may include but are not limited to, projects that address social problems such as homelessness, violence, drug abuse, unemployment, illiteracy, discrimination, AIDS, and pollution.  Projects that benefit women or girls are especially valued.

The Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award Program

The Violet Richardson Award program begins at the local Soroptimist club level, where the type of award varies. Club level winners then become eligible for one of 28 $1,000 awards. In addition, $1,000 will be contributed in honor of these winners to their volunteer organizations. One finalist will be chosen from among the 28 winners for an additional award, including a contribution of $2,500 to the finalist’s volunteer organization.

If you think you would make a good Violet Richardson Award candidate, please complete this VRA Application and tell us about your volunteer action. Please send it to the local Soroptimist Club listed on the application.

For more Information about the VRA Program, here is an informational VRA Flyer that gives more details.

Good luck to you! And, even if you don’t win a Violet Richardson Award, we applaud your efforts to make your community and the world a better place.

Winners are eligible to receive cash awards for themselves and the charitable organizations of their choice. Visit Awards and Scholarships for details.
