  • Please enjoy some STEM Design Challenges that you can complete at home!  You can use any materials you have available at home to complete your challenges.  Have fun, be creative, and good luck!  Once you complete a challenge, make sure to share it with others, maybe send a picture to your teacher?

Living Room Fort

  • Build a living room fort!  You can use any materials you have at home, just make sure you can fit inside your fort for some excellent adventures!  Then, write a story about how you built your fort. 

Paper Airplane

  • Make a paper airplane that will fly at least 5 feet.  Test your airplane, how far can it fly?  Can you modify it to fly further?  Record at least five distances your airplane flies, using a measuring tool to measure the distance.  Then, write a story about flying on your airplane on a grand adventure! 

Build a Bridge

  • Build a bridge between two surfaces that will support something you choose.  Will it support more weight?   Draw a picture of your bridge.  Then, write a description of how you decided what materials to use to build your bridge. 

Communication

  • Design a communication device so you can chat with a friend who lives several houses away from you.  How will you make sure you can communicate?  Draw a picture of your device.  Then, write about it and tell how it works. 

Toys

  • Design a toy.  Your toy can be played any way you choose!  Draw a picture of your toy.  Then, write a story about playing with it!

Aliens

  • Design an alien with specific adaptations to survive.  Click here for more information.  Then, write a story about your alien surviving in its new environment! 

Design a Shoe

  • Design a shoe that will take you on an adventure!  Maybe you’d like to go rock climbing?  Or walking on snow?  Or walking on water?  Or climb a tree?  Or any other adventure!  Design a shoe that will halp you on your adventure and function in the environment you choose.  Then, write a story that tells all about your adventure with your unique shoe design! 

Rolling Vehicle

  • Make a rolling vehicle.  Can you make it roll on its own, without pushing it?  How far will your vehicle roll?  Record at least three distances your vehicle rols, using a measuring tool to measure the distance.  Then, write a story about where your vehicle takes you! 

Parachutes

  • Design a parachute that attaches to something you find at home and allows you to drop it safely to the ground.  Draw a picture of your parachute.  Then, write a letter to your teacher explaining why your parachute is better than anyone else’s parachute! 

Ecosystems

  • Design an ecosystem.  Click here for more information.  Then, write a description of your ecosystem. 

Catapults

  • Make a catapult to launch a pom-pom.  How far can you launch the pom-pom?  Can you aim your catapult so the pom-pom lands in a specific place?  Draw a picture of your catapult.  Then, write a story about using your catapult to play a game with some friends! 

Towers

  • Make a tall tower that stands on its own.  How tall can you make it?  Can you support something on top of your tower?  Draw a picture and record how tall your tower is.  Then, write a description of your tower or your favorite building. 

Be Musical

  • Design a musical instrument.  How does your instrument work?  What sounds will it make?  Can it be played with other instruments?  Draw a picture of your instrument.  Then, write about what instrument you would like to play when you get older! 

Board Games

  • Make a board game that you can play with your family.  Make sure to create all the different pieces you will need in order to play your game.  Play your game with your family.  Then, write directions so others can play your game! 

Trash to Treasure

  • Make something useful out of trash.  Use your imagination and be creative!  What will you make?  How is it used?  Draw a picture.  Then, write a story about how you will use your creation.
