Some how today is the last day of April.  This was, at the same time, the longest month I’ve ever experienced and the fastest month! It is crazy to think we were scheduled to come back from Spring Break a month ago!  We have learned a lot this month and we’ve also had a lot of struggles. It’s important to recognize both but we should definitely celebrate our successes.  We are among the few schools in the district that has consistenly contacted and worked with every single student in our school.  The fact that every week have almost 1000 students that speak and work with at least one of their teachers is amazing!  It shows a lot of the community we have built, the relationships that have been developed and the hard working students and staff that we are so lucky to have.  We have about another month left of this school year, lets keep that momentum and make this the best experience it can be!

As you all know, Governor Sisolak made the decision yesterday to continue distance learning for the rest of the school year.  I am heartbroken over this decision even though I know it is the correct decision to keep us all safe and healthy.  I know you all have a lot of questions and we don’t have all of the answers right now but stay patient, stay understanding and stay hard working.  We will get through this together! You are lucky that you have the best teachers in the world working with you and you will be prepared for your future because of them and because of your hard work.  As I mentioned before, future history books will discuss this event, what do you want your story to say?  This has never happened at this level before, keep a journal and write things down, make videos to remember this time, start a blog, start a podcast.  You’re going to want to tell your kids about this, make sure you document it! It will be a great story to share.

Today’s Student of the Day is Sierra Perez!  Nominated by Mrs. Patetta who says “Sierra was a new student to our school this semester.  Not only is it hard to switch schools in the middle of the year, but it is even harder to get caught up in math.  She was very shy and hesitant to do the work at first, but she didn't give up and now has a smile on her face and is very confident in her math skills.  Sierra is a good example of not giving up when things are tough.  I'm very proud of her.”

Our Staff Howl goes to Mrs. Valle!  It would have been very easy for our librarian to take a step back and not keep creating like she usually does but that is not Mrs. Valle!  She has been brainstorming how to reach more kids, get books in their hands, create contests and how to work with teachers to support them with their teaching during distance learning.  Talk with your ELA teacher about joining the digital book club! It’s gonna be awesome, just like Mrs. Valle!

The  2nd phase of distance learning starts next week.  All Lessons are available at washoeschools.net/distancelearning starting today.  The locations and times for paper packet pickups are listed there as well.  For Spanish Springs Families, it is at Spanish Springs High School Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10-3.

Take the time today to be present, to be mindful and to really be in the moment.  With so much going on, the days can kind of just meld together.  Take a few moments to relax today, think of what you are thankful for and remember all the good in your life.  It’s important for us to sit back and recognize it sometimes.

Our Staff Howl goes to Mrs. Guthrie!  A few days ago she noticed that she and her kids at home were getting a little zoomed out so they took the day off from zoom meetings, they played, they got outside and they enjoyed family time. Then they got back to work! Thank you for recognizing your families needs first and doing what was best for you and your kids!  It’s a great reminder of what our priorities need to be during distance learning.  Thanks for showing us the power of play Mrs. Guthrie!

A couple of #distanceshawsome posts to share.  One of our 6th graders, Cortlyn, made a tutorial video of how to make face masks to wear in public.  Thank you for using your talent to help people stay safe Cortlyn!  Another story is Mrs. Paxton’s team took a field trip through her eyes to Home Depot.  They practiced proper social distancing, the purpose of wearing a mask and how to sanitize yourself and your belongings when you’re done.  Talk about relevant learning!  Nice job Team 6!

It is National Assistant Principal’s Week this week.  Ms. Shearin shared this funny story about Mr. Vanderpool from a few years ago.  There was a horrible smell coming from somewhere near her classroom and Joe poked his head in to see if they could figure it out.  They searched some lockers and found an old coffee mug.  They opened it and Ms. Shearin saw what looked like a biscuit floating on top of the coffee, wondering why someone would do that in their coffee?  They then realized it was two inches of mold that had grown!  Mr. Vanderpool ran to a nearby garbage can, attempting not to puke.  Ms. Shearin responded with “You must not change the diapers at home!” haha!

That story made me think of what is growing inside of all of your lockers right now!  Hopefully we’re able to get back into them soon and see what surprises are in there.

One week down and it is important to remember that we’re all still new to this.  We’re going to make mistakes, we’re going to struggle and things might not go the way we want them to.  That’s ok!  Expect mistakes, learn from them, ask for support and we’ll all begin to thrive in our new way of school.  It’s important to look for the positives each day!

You challenge today is to find something positive happening around you today and share that with your teacher, your friends and your family. Let’s spread that positivity Coyotes!

I want to see what all of you are doing each day so if you’d like to share a video of your new daily schedule, feel free to post it to Instagram, Twitter or Facebook and tag it with #distanceshawsome Can’t wait to see all of you!
