- Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as a chronic absence.
- When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating.
- The Board of Trustees of WCSD believes in order to graduate from high school and be career and/or college ready, all students must have positive conditions for learning. Good attendance is crucial for optimal learning. The attendance policy is designed to keep students in school and provide them access to the curriculum.
All absences require a student to complete make-up work. If a student is absent for ANY portion of the day, it is the student's responsibility to receive the make-up work from the classroom teacher, complete it with high expectations, and return it WITHIN 3 SCHOOL DAYS.
If a student is given the work and completes it within the appropriate amount of time, their absence will be changed to present within infinite campus. If the student does not complete the work within the given time, the absence will remain.
If a student accumulates 4 absences without returning any make-up work, the parent will be notified and asked to attend a parent/teacher conference to assist in creating a plan for better attendance.
***If a student accumulates 17 absences throughout the school year without returning make-up work, the student will be held-back/retained for that school year.***
This is a new WCSD policy that will be enforced by the district.
