Coming this year: Canvas, a new learning managment system

    (Aug. 9)

    What is Canvas?

Canvas is an online learning management system (LMS) that teachers use to share online course learning materials, assignments and grades. Under this program students can submit assignments and access classroom materials. This is the same system that higher learning institutions, such as TMCC and UNR use for students to manage their classes.  Starting in the 2023-2024 school year, high school teacher and students will be using Canvas instead of Microsoft Teams.

Why is the district changing Teams with Canvas?

Canvas is a learning management system and is easier for students to use for classwork.  Canvas is also the same program that many colleges and universities use for their students; therefore, students will be better prepared for class management in higher education.

    How do students access Canvas?

Option 1: Go to https://washoe.instructure.com/ and use their district login (same one they use for logging in to computers at school or Office.com).
Option 2: Login to Clever and find Canvas app.
Option 3: Add the Canvas Student app to their personal phone/tablet.

Note: Once you have installed the app, you will be asked to add your institution. If you search "Washoe" --                 nothing pops up. However, if you press enter anyways, it will take you to the appropriate login.

Is there a student orientation for Canvas?

Yes, all students can participate in the “Passport to Canvas” self-paced course and/or search their question in the Student Guides found on the Help tab in Canvas.

    How do families access Canvas?

Separate access for families is not yet enabled. The district is looking into the most secure option for opening this up. In the meantime, families will need to have their student login to Canvas to view their work. Grades for assignments can also be viewed in Infinite Campus as usual.

Who do I contact if I have trouble accessing Canvas?

Users should use the Canvas Help menu found on the app. For students there is a Canvas Troubleshooting Guide with the most common issues which provides technical assistance.
