How Do I Apply?

  • The Board of Trustees supports the use of committees to advise the Board and provide a perspective which may differ from that of staff regarding educational programs, safety, operations, financial reporting, maintenance, and supporting services. The work of committees helps to ensure programs and other services are relevant to address current standards; meet the needs of students and parents/guardians; and have appropriate resources to support high quality student outcomes.

    To apply, please submit your application and letter of interest.  In some cases, a resume may be required.  Refer to the specific committee page for additional information, to include current needs and application deadlines.  Failure to submit a complete application packet by the submission deadline may result in the application being denied without consideration.

Committees Currently Seeking Applicants

The Washoe County School District is seeking applicants for a number of community advisory committees that serve the District’s 64,000 students and their families. There are a variety of committees that meet throughout the year to help set policies and guide the District forward. 
 
Although the application periods for the following committees may have closed, the District will continue to accept applications until all positions are filled.  These two-year terms will run July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2019.
 
  • Meets periodically, generally every 2-3 months
  • These advisory committees to the Board of Trustees share the same membership and provide an additional layer of oversight on capital expenditures for the acquisition, construction, repair, and renovation of schools in the Washoe County School District
  • The District is seeking one member each in the following categories for a two-year term beginning July 1: Construction Projects & Finance Representative, Gaming Industry Representative, and General Public Representative

Career and Technical Education Advisory Technical Skills Committee

  • Meets periodically, generally quarterly
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations to the Superintendent related to the District’s career and technical education programs.
  • The District is seeking one member each in the following categories for a two-year term beginning July 1: Health Sciences Representative, Human Services Representative, and Skilled and Technical Sciences Representative

Council on Career and Technical Education

  • Meets periodically, generally quarterly
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations to the Superintendent related to the District’s career and technical education programs.
  • The District is seeking one member each in the following categories for a two-year term beginning July 1: Health Sciences Representative, Human Services Representative, and Skilled and Technical Sciences Representative

Council on Family Resource Centers

  • Meets periodically, generally quarterly
  • Assists in creation of the District’s Family Resource Centers’ action plans, and reviews and provides recommendations to the superintendent related to the responsibilities of Family Resource Centers.
  • This is a new committee and the District is seeking seven members to represent the areas where Family Resource Centers are located.

School Naming Committee

  • Meets periodically, to be determined
  • This advisory committee to the Board of Trustees shall evaluate nominations and make recommendations related to school names.
  • This is a new committee of the District and 10 voting members from the community are being sought as follows: one (1) to represent each of the seven (7) election districts of the Trustees, two at-large members for those election districts; and one (1) student from a District high school.
    • Please note - as this is a new committee, half of the members shall serve an initial term of one-year, with the other half serving an initial term of two-years beginning July 1.

Sexuality, Health and Responsibility Education (S.H.A.R.E.) Advisory Committee

  • Generally meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations to the Superintendent and Board of Trustees related to the District’s S.H.A.R.E. curriculum.
  • The District is seeking members in the following categories for a two-year term beginning July 1: Two (2) Parent/Guardian Representatives, two (2) total representatives from the following categories of counseling, teaching, or a District student.

Student Wellness Advisory Committee

  • Meets periodically, generally bi-monthly
  • This advisory committee to the Superintendent evaluates and makes recommendations related to improved health and wellness outcomes for students.
  • The District is seeking members in the following categories for a two-year term beginning July 1: Community Member from the Health Arena, At-Large Community Member

Zoning Advisory Committee

  • Meets periodically, to be determined
  • This advisory committee to the Board of Trustees shall evaluates and make recommendations related to school attendance zones.
  • This is a new standing committee of the District and 10 voting members from the community are being sought as follows: one (1) to represent each of the seven (7) election districts of the Trustees, three (3) parents/guardians.
    • Please note - as this is a new committee, half of the members shall serve an initial term of one-year, with the other half serving an initial term of two-years beginning July 1.
