Committee Information

The Washoe County School District is seeking applicants for a number of community advisory committees that serve the District’s 64,000 students and their families. There are a variety of committees that meet throughout the year to help set policies and guide the District forward. 
 
The District has an immediate opening on the Sexuality, Health and Responsibility Education (SHARE) Advisory Committee.  For additional information, please visit the SHARE Advisory Committee website.
 
The following committees are currently seeking applications for terms which will begin July 1, 2017.
 
  • Meets periodically, generally every 2-3 months
  • These advisory committees to the Board of Trustees share the same membership and provide an additional layer of oversight on capital expenditures for the acquisition, construction, repair, and renovation of schools in the Washoe County School District
  • The District is seeking one member each in the following categories for a two-year term beginning July 1: Construction Projects & Finance Representative, Gaming Industry Representative, and General Public Representative

Career and Technical Education Advisory Technical Skills Committee

  • Meets periodically, generally quarterly
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations to the Superintendent related to the District’s career and technical education programs.
  • The District is seeking one member each in the following categories for a two-year term beginning July 1: Health Sciences Representative, Human Services Representative, and Skilled and Technical Sciences Representative

Council on Career and Technical Education

  • Meets periodically, generally quarterly
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations to the Superintendent related to the District’s career and technical education programs.
  • The District is seeking one member each in the following categories for a two-year term beginning July 1: Health Sciences Representative, Human Services Representative, and Skilled and Technical Sciences Representative

Council on Family Resource Centers

  • Meets periodically, generally quarterly
  • Assists in creation of the District’s Family Resource Centers’ action plans, and reviews and provides recommendations to the superintendent related to the responsibilities of Family Resource Centers.
  • This is a new committee and the District is seeking seven members to represent the areas where Family Resource Centers are located.

Safe and Healthy Schools Commission

  • Generally meets the first Monday of each month at 2:00 p.m.
  • The Safe and Healthy Schools Commission assists the Board of Trustees on issues relating to the safety and security of schools.
  • The District is seeking members in the following categories for a two-year term beginning July 1: Parent/Guardian, Two (2) Representatives from the Medical/Mental Health Community; a Representative with Emergency Services experience (including current/former law enforcement, first responder, military service, or similar experience); a Government Agency/Elected Official Representative; Three (3) At-Large Community Representatives

Sexuality, Health and Responsibility Education (S.H.A.R.E.) Advisory Committee

  • Generally meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations to the Superintendent and Board of Trustees related to the District’s S.H.A.R.E. curriculum.
  • The District is seeking members in the following categories for a two-year term beginning July 1: Two (2) Parent/Guardian Representatives, three (3) total representatives from the following categories of counseling, religion, teaching, or a District student.

Student Attendance Advisory Committee

  • Meets periodically, generally quarterly
  • This advisory committee to the superintendent reviews data related to the attendance and truancy of students in the District
  • The District is seeking members in the following categories for a two-year term beginning July 1: Child welfare Representative, Parent/guardian or Provider of Community Services Representative, at-large Representative

Student Wellness Advisory Committee

  • Meets periodically, generally bi-monthly
  • This advisory committee to the Superintendent evaluates and makes recommendations related to improved health and wellness outcomes for students.
  • The District is seeking members in the following categories for a two-year term beginning July 1: Community Member from the Health Arena, At-Large Community Member

Zoning Advisory Committee

  • Meets periodically, to be determined
  • This advisory committee to the Board of Trustees shall evaluates and make recommendations related to school attendance zones.
  • This is a new standing committee of the District and 10 voting members from the community are being sought as follows: one (1) to represent each of the seven (7) election districts of the Trustees, three (3) parents/guardians. Six (6) members shall serve an initial term of one-year, with seven members serving an initial term of two-years beginning July 1.

High School Educational Specification Community Design Team

  • Meets periodically, to be determined
  • This advisory committee to the superintendent shall evaluate and make recommendations related to the specific facility needs, space requirements, relationships, and characteristics for the new high schools in the District
  • Participation involves attending five workshops that average 4 – 8 hours each over the course of the next five months between approximately May and October of 2017
